Knowledge Drop: J. Cole’s ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive’ Almost Had A Feature

Krayzie Bone & Bizzy Bone were supposed to arrive on a Cole song together.

J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive celebrates its fifth-anniversary ceremony on December 9. And while the album is known for producing the famous “Platinum with no features” meme due to its financial success and lack of fellow artists, it was initially assumed to have not 1, but a couple of other M.C.s on it.

According to a 2014 HipHopDX article, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony members Krayzie Bone and Bizzy Bone recorded a song with Cole that slated for Forest Hills Drive.

“Krayzie’s going to be on J. Cole’s latest album. J. Cole did not even remember Bone’s story, how they got a Greyhound to meet Eazy-E, who employed them to his Ruthless Records banner,” stated Bone Thugs director Steve Lobel. “The record’s fucking crazy. Crazy. Bizzy [Bone] got on it, too.”

During his career, Cole has shown an appreciation for Bone Thugs. He sampled their trademark track, “1st of the Month,” on “God’s Gift,” and included a flow from their The Notorious B.I.G. collab, “Notorious Thugs,” on “Niggaz Know.”

Cole’s latest three solo albums have not had any guest vocalists, and he has worked much of the production on each project himself. Despite that fact, he has been vocal about no longer liking the meme about his music.

In a G.Q. cover story, he called the “Platinum with no features” joke “almost embarrassing now,” and stated it even got him to consider putting a feature on one of his upcoming releases to put an end to it the gag.

Despite not adding the Bone Thugs song, Forest Hills Drive went on to be certified triple platinum and nominated for the Best Rap Album Grammy in 2016. It produced hits like “Love Yourz” and “Wet Dreamz.”
